When you think of Hannah, think of persistence and faith. At the time of history when infertility and a woman both scorn and ridicule, Hannah faced an added headache. She became an object of cruel mocking by her husband’s other wife.
Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”
Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
“Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lordremembered her. So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”1 Samuel 1:6-20
Had you been Hannah, how would you have responded?
Hannah refused to lash out at her rival, but instead took her sorrow and loss to God. She prayed honestly to the Lord begging him for her son. She refused to believe that her difficult situation had to remain permanent.
How many times have we lashed out at our rivals because of what they have said about you or your situation and things in your life because worse. Many times when you lash out at situations when you don’t have to you are really giving power to that situation to control your life. Let us be like Hannah that when your rival comes against you instead of lashing out take your sorrow, pain and situation to God in prayer and God will restore all that was lost and reward you in the presence of your rivals.
Hannah Prayed sincerely, specifically, and sacrificially. She did not back away from her request, even when rebuked by an uncomprehending priest and God rewarded heart faith with a son, Samuel. When the time came for her to keep her word and give Samuel to the service of the Lord, she did so with a thankful heart.
Pray specifically about your need, want and the situation that your facing. Be persistent and have faith in God no matter what and He will reward you and answer your prayers and fulfill the desires of your heart all for his glory.
Prayer changed the course of Hannah’s life and impacted an entire nation. God used her son Samuel in a key role as a prophet during a lifetime of king David, and his influence outlived him as he gave great impetus to the prophetic movement.
